⭐⭐⭐
Pros: Beautiful photography, some gorgeous architecture and interesting histories/As with all the places in these books, the reader is left to wonder why these houses were abandoned when someone obviously loved them once.
Cons: It's sad to see so many buildings left to ruin, shows how quickly things can change/There was an understandable melancholy air to some of the places pictured.
Full Review:
Ranging from the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the Green Mountains of Vermont, we're taken on another photographic road trip through places time forgot. Desorisers delivers once more, telling detailed histories when she can find them and offering her own thoughts and feelings about the places that she's visited.
Though there is a melancholy air to some of the places, Desorisers never fails to remind the reader that these places were once alive and thriving. They hold memories of love, laughter and life. To see them falling into ruin is both sad and nostalgic, making the reader wonder what led up to these places being abandoned.
Desoriser's story at the end, of how as a child she was determined that she would one day own her grandparents house and she made that dream come true was both heartwarming and sad. She has so many memories, good and bad between those walls, as a child, as an adult and when it came time for her to move on, she did so, knowing that though the house would be a home to new people and create new stories, the memories she had would stay with her forever.
And it's the same with these buildings. All we can do is see them and wonder at the memories that they hold within their crumbling walls.
