"Jesus captures one of the Whisperers and brings her back to the Hilltop. Carl falls for her and though she wants to stay, her people come and collect her. Carl, of course, goes off on his own to get her back."
4 Stars.
Pros: It's good to see that Carl is growing up and maturing but at the same time, he is still a teenager and prone to think with his hormones instead of his brain.
Cons: Oh young love, how stupid it makes us. Maggie's insistence that Carl doesn't "know" Lydia because he spent one day with her makes sense but teenagers will be teenagers.
Full Review:
While searching for their missing men, Jesus and his group are attacked by what they think are zombies. But these zombies have knives and fight back. During the fight, Jesus wounds one of them and brings her back to the Hilltop with him. They keep her locked up and question her. She's a sixteen year old girl named Lydia.
Carl, meanwhile, is rekindling his friendship with Sophia. While talking, they're attacked by two boys who Sophia had fought off earlier. They beat up Sophia but Carl comes back and beats them nearly to death. They all land in the infirmary and the boys parents are obviously livid. They want Carl punished, but they know he won't be punished because he's the famous Carl Grimes and Maggie is close with him and will take it easy on him.
Maggie does lock him up for a few hours, long enough for him to talk to Lydia through the wall. While Lydia and Carl get to know each other, Sophia wakes up and tells Maggie exactly what happened. Meanwhile the boys parents are fuming over Maggies leadership. And Gregory, who's still kicking around, suggests a plan. They kill Maggie and he gets to lead once again.
Once Maggie lets Carl out, he convinces her to let Lydia out as well, to show her that they are good people and they're not savages. Carl and Lydia spend the day together and of course, end up sleeping together. Lydia later on admits that it was nice, that it wasn't like the other times, and to Carl's horror she explains that she would sleep with the men in her group because that's what nature intends. But she now knows that it can be different and she wants to stay at the Hilltop with Carl.
The boys that Carl beat up wake up and Maggie suggests relocation to them and their families. The parents are livid, since they've been at the Hilltop longer than Maggie and won't be threatened or pushed around. Gregory diffuses the situation and asks Maggie to come and have a drink with him so they can talk this over. He poisons her drink and she passes out but of course, Jesus sees the whole thing and saves her.
They lock Gregory up and while they're doing that, an army of zombies gather at the gate. The leader, a woman that calls herself Alpha, removes the zombie skin from her face to show Maggie that she means her no harm. All she wants is a trade, Maggies' people for her own. Ken and Dante are alive and even though Carl is vehemently against it, Maggie agrees on the trade. She gives Lydia back to the Whisperers and Ken and Dante are returned safe and sound. Dante tells Maggie that whoever these people are, they should be careful around them because even though they were blindfolded at all times, they could still hear and it sounded like there were thousands of them.
Lydia returns to the group and resumes her role. Alpha is her Mother but there is nothing resembling a maternal bond between them. Sophia goes to check on Carl who was upset when Lydia left and it turns out that his room is empty. Carl's gone to follow the Whisperers and to get Lydia back.
