"An extremely dark turn in the series when Rick's group meets the infamous Negan. Rick's arrogance in thinking they could fight them is quickly proven very, very wrong, with dire consequences. "
4 Stars
Pros: As with all stories, Hubris is the downfall of the hero, Rick was too arrogant, thinking his group could fight the Saviors when he knew nothing about them, and thus, he paid, dearly.
Cons: Abraham/Glen, so many good characters gone/Negan is so uncouth, he reminds me a whole Hell of a lot of Trump and that'd disgusting.
Full Review:
On their way back from the Hilltop, the group encounters men on motorcycles. They say that they are Negan and that they speak for him and now everything that Rick's' group has, is theirs. Rick decides to be arrogant and kill all of them except for the one, telling him to go back to Negan and tell him their arrangement. That they are protecting the Hilltop and that if Negan comes after them again, it won't end well for him.
Eugene and Abraham set off in search of supplies for Eugene to start making bullets. They're attacked and Abraham is killed. They bring Eugene back to Alexandria as a hostage but the group manage to repel their attack and send them running. They bury Abraham and everyone is stunned. Rick decides that they have to go to the Hilltop to gather what they can in way of supplies to prepare for an eventual attack. He knows that these people will be back and so he wants to be prepared.
The group that heads out to the Hilltop consists of Rick, Carl, Michonne, Heath, Maggie, Glen and Sophia. Since Maggie is pregnant, Glen wants them to move to the Hilltop since he feels that with their better numbers, they'll be safer. But of course they're attacked by none other than Negan himself. He has at least fifty people with him and displays his power by randomly selecting a person out of Rick's group to be killed, as punishment for Rick killing his other men.
That unfortunate soul and Negan picks Glen. He bashes Glen's head in with his infamous baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, Lucille. After killing Glen, Negan leaves, telling Rick that this is the new world order, that he'll do what he tells him to do and he'll like it, or else. Once they're gone, Rick and the group take Glen's body to the Hilltop. Rick tells Gregory what happened and attacks him, infuriated that Gregory didn't tell him how many people Negan had at his disposal.
Gregory pleads innocence, that he didn't know and Jesus backs him up. Rick and the group leave, all except for Maggie and Sophia, who stay behind to try and build a better life for themselves and the baby. Jesus goes with Rick back to Alexandria, but when they get there they find that Alexandria has been attacked. Amazingly enough, no one was killed and they also managed to take the man who killed Abraham prisoner.
Rick admits to Andrea later that he doesn't think he can fight Negan. That he just has too many men. And so instead of being arrogant and resorting to violence, as he usually does, he tells the people of Alexandria that they will not fight. That they will do whatever Negan asks and that first thing is to release the prisoner.
Of course, as the prisoner is walking away, Rick tells Jesus to gather up supplies and make sure that he doesn't get too much of a head-start. They're going to follow him and try to figure out exactly how strong Negan and the Saviors really are.
